How to Find a Six-Month Clinical Training Placement

To find clinical training after kunskapsprov, you must approach Swedish healthcare employers yourself: Socialstyrelsen does not allocate a workplace. Apply only after passing both the theoretical and practical parts of the proficiency test, show your Socialstyrelsen decision clearly, and target a service that can provide six continuous months, suitable patient-facing work, interprofessional cooperation, qualified supervision and the required assessment. Before you start, the provider must also ensure that a valid särskilt förordnande, or special authorisation, covers your medical work.

This guide focuses on the placement search: where to look, what to send, whom to contact and what to confirm before accepting. The detailed rules and assessment during the six months belong in the separate guide to six-month clinical training for non-EU doctors.

Confirm you are ready to approach employers

The national threshold for starting praktisk tjänstgöring is a pass in the complete knowledge test. Socialstyrelsen then sends a decision by email. Its practical-service instructions say that a formal Swedish grade and a completed healthcare-laws course are not national prerequisites for starting this stage, although an employer may require either or both.

Readiness check before contacting a healthcare provider
Item National position What an employer may ask for
Knowledge test Both theoretical and practical parts must be passed. The Socialstyrelsen decision confirming your status.
Swedish No separate language certificate is required nationally just to begin service. C1, Swedish 3, TISUS or another accepted document may be an employer condition.
Laws course It may be completed before, after or alongside service outside working hours. Some providers prefer it completed before the start date.
Right to work Professional eligibility does not grant immigration permission. Evidence that you may work in Sweden, or a viable permit process.

Regional policies differ. Region Skåne, Region Stockholm and Västra Götalandsregionen currently describe high Swedish requirements for patient-facing work, and some request formal C1-level evidence. Treat the national minimum and the recruiting employer’s selection criteria as two separate checks.

What a suitable clinical-training workplace must provide

A vacancy is useful only if the workplace can meet Socialstyrelsen’s assessment conditions. The six months must be completed consecutively within one verksamhet, the service for which the responsible manager and supervisor work. Part-time service is possible only at a minimum of 50 per cent and must add up to six months of full-time service. Prior clinical experience cannot shorten the period.

The setting may be a healthcare centre (vårdcentral) or a hospital department. It should be broad enough for the employer to assess you through direct patient encounters and cooperation with other healthcare professions. The supervisor must hold Swedish medical licensure and have suitable experience supervising AT, BT or ST doctors. The workplace must be able to evaluate basic clinical routines, judgement, professional conduct, independence and patient safety using Socialstyrelsen’s certificate.

Send the prospective manager the official information-and-certificate PDF early. Ask the manager and proposed supervisor to read it before making an offer. This turns a vague request for “practice” into a concrete discussion about a regulated assessment period.

How to find clinical training after kunskapsprov

Use several channels at the same time. Start with SKR’s list of Sweden’s 21 regions, open each region’s career portal, and search both current and archived wording to learn how that employer labels the role. Check Arbetsförmedlingen’s Platsbanken as well as private-provider career pages.

Useful Swedish searches include praktisk tjänstgöring läkare, praktisk tjänstgöring efter kunskapsprov, underläkare praktisk tjänstgöring and utlandsutbildad läkare kunskapsprov. Job titles are inconsistent, so a search limited to the English phrase “clinical training” will miss relevant vacancies.

Five placement-search channels
Channel How to use it Important limit
Regional vacancies Search all regions and save alerts where available. Advertisements may appear only when a department has supervision capacity.
Platsbanken Repeat several Swedish search terms and locations. An advert can expire quickly; apply through the stated channel.
Direct contact Approach a relevant verksamhetschef with a targeted case. A general human-resources inbox may not know the service’s capacity.
Regional interest route Use a formal expression-of-interest page when a region provides one. Registration is not a promise of a placement.
Targeted project Check narrow initiatives such as Region Dalarna’s Med3Comp. Eligibility, specialty needs and selection rules may exclude many applicants.

Region Stockholm explicitly advises applicants to contact different providers and check its vacancies. Västra Götalandsregionen invites direct contact with hospitals, healthcare centres and dental services and currently offers an interest-registration route. Region Skåne says it offers salaried practical service when capacity exists. These examples show why a Sweden-wide search is stronger than waiting for one national application round.

If your goal is a normal medical job after licensure, keep that broader campaign separate. The complete first Swedish doctor-job strategy belongs to the post-licence job guide.

Prepare an application employers can assess quickly

Make your status understandable in the first screen of the application. A manager should not have to decode your licensing route before deciding whether the service can host you.

  • Opening profile: state that you are a non-EU/EEA-trained doctor, have passed both kunskapsprov parts and are seeking the six-month practical service required by your Socialstyrelsen decision.
  • Evidence: attach the relevant Socialstyrelsen decision, language evidence, Swedish laws-course status and a concise Swedish CV. Use the employer’s secure portal for identity or sensitive documents.
  • Clinical fit: summarise recent work, broad general skills, specialty experience and the patient groups you can discuss accurately.
  • Practical readiness: give availability, preferred locations, relocation flexibility and your present right-to-work or permit status without implying that Socialstyrelsen grants immigration permission.
  • Employer checklist: link to Socialstyrelsen’s practical-service instructions and ask whether the service can provide the supervisor, authorisation and assessment.

Contact clinics and follow up strategically

Address a named manager whenever possible. In Swedish healthcare, the verksamhetschef is often the decisive operational contact, although recruitment and authorisation may involve human resources, an education unit and other managers. Write a short subject line such as “Praktisk tjänstgöring efter kunskapsprov – läkare” and keep the message focused on the employer’s ability to host a compliant six-month assessment.

Use four short parts: your exact Socialstyrelsen stage; why this service matches your experience; the dates and locations you can accept; and one clear question about placement capacity and supervision. The dedicated cold-email template for a Swedish verksamhetschef provides wording without turning this page into an email-template article.

Record each contact, answer and follow-up date. If there is no reply, one polite follow-up after about a week is reasonable; then continue the wider search. If you are outside Sweden, explain your availability and permit position precisely and use the separate guide to searching for Swedish doctor work from abroad for the remote-application logistics.

Check the placement before you say yes

Questions to resolve in writing
Question What a sound answer identifies Why it matters
Is the workplace suitable? One service with broad patient contact and interprofessional work. The employer must be able to complete the full assessment certificate.
Who supervises? A named Swedish-licensed doctor with relevant supervisory experience. Supervision is a formal workplace requirement, not an informal promise.
How is service scheduled? Six continuous full-time months, or at least 50 per cent until the full-time equivalent is met. The period cannot be shortened and normally cannot be split between workplaces.
Who arranges authorisation? The responsible regional process or a private provider’s Socialstyrelsen application. Service without valid authorisation is not accepted.
What are the terms? Contract, salary or other financing, insurance, duties and permit support. Socialstyrelsen does not fund the placement or provide insurance.

Also agree who will sign the final certificate: both the responsible manager and supervisor have defined roles. Ask how progress will be reviewed and what happens if absence interrupts the period. Socialstyrelsen decides individual questions about extension or interruption, so do not improvise a replacement arrangement.

Special authorisation, pay and immigration

A doctor without Swedish licensure needs särskilt förordnande to perform medical work during the placement. A region may issue it for service in its own operation when the candidate has passed both examination parts and received the relevant Socialstyrelsen decision. A private provider – including one operating under a regional contract – must apply to Socialstyrelsen. The official instructions recommend that a private provider apply at least one month before the proposed start. The separate guide to working before legitimation with special authorisation owns the full legal and procedural explanation.

Do not assume that every placement is unpaid or paid. Socialstyrelsen says you must find both the workplace and a means of support, and it does not take responsibility for remuneration or insurance. Some regions publicly describe salaried placements, but availability and terms are employer-specific. Obtain the contract, pay, working hours, insurance and applicable collective-agreement information in writing.

Migrationsverket’s current employee guidance lists foreign-qualified doctors who are obtaining Swedish professional certification among groups covered by a reduced salary threshold. A qualifying contract must still meet the applicable pay, employment-condition and insurance rules. Verify the current threshold and your individual permit route when an offer is made; these rules can change.

Watch a supported placement route in practice

Region Dalarna’s Med3Comp route shows how a selected employer-led programme can combine a salaried six-month placement with supervision and integration support. It is a narrow route for qualifying specialist doctors and is not a general placement service or a substitute for Socialstyrelsen’s process.

Watch Doctors Going to Sweden, Part 3: Med3Comp Project from 15:58. Janna Sporre-Gyll, Med3Comp project manager at Region Dalarna, explains that the clinic manager interviews the candidate and decides whom to offer the practical-service placement.

Use this 30-day placement-search plan

A repeatable first month
Period Main action Output
Days 1-3 Audit eligibility, documents, language evidence, permit status and dates. One complete application pack and a clear status summary.
Days 4-10 Build a target list across regions, public units and private providers. At least three groups: advertised, direct-contact and programme routes.
Days 11-20 Send tailored applications and record contacts, answers and deadlines. A live search pipeline rather than one unanswered application.
Days 21-30 Follow up once, expand geography and prepare for Swedish interviews. More qualified conversations and fewer unsuitable offers.

Measure progress by suitable employer conversations, not only applications sent. If managers repeatedly identify the same barrier – language, unclear documentation, relocation, permit uncertainty or lack of recent broad clinical work – address that barrier and revise the pack before sending another large batch.

Avoid common placement-search mistakes

  • Waiting for Socialstyrelsen to assign a workplace.
  • Applying before passing both parts of the kunskapsprov.
  • Searching only in English or only in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.
  • Calling every arrangement “praktik” without confirming that it meets the regulated practical-service assessment.
  • Accepting an observership with no medical duties and assuming it will count.
  • Starting before special authorisation is valid.
  • Ignoring salary, insurance, immigration permission or who signs the final certificate.
  • Sending generic mass emails that do not explain why the service can evaluate your competence.

Frequently asked questions

Does Socialstyrelsen find a clinical-training placement for me?

No. Socialstyrelsen explicitly says that you must find the workplace yourself. Use regional career portals, Platsbanken, private-provider sites, direct contact with relevant managers and any formal regional interest routes.

Can I split the six months between two workplaces?

Normally no. Current Socialstyrelsen guidance says the six months are completed consecutively within one service. If an interruption or unusual circumstance arises, obtain case-specific guidance before changing the arrangement.

Must practical service be full-time?

Not necessarily. It may be part-time at a minimum of 50 per cent, but the total period must equal six months of full-time service. Confirm the schedule and authorisation period in writing.

Must I have a C1 certificate before practical service?

Socialstyrelsen’s national instructions do not require a separate approved Swedish grade merely to start after the complete test, but employers may impose language criteria. Several regions currently describe C1-level or equivalent requirements for patient-facing work.

Is the six-month placement paid?

There is no universal national guarantee. Some regional placements are salaried, while Socialstyrelsen says it does not provide remuneration or insurance. Confirm the employment form, salary, insurance and any collective-agreement terms before accepting.

Can foreign specialist experience shorten the six months?

No. Socialstyrelsen states that previous professional experience does not remove or shorten this requirement. It may strengthen your application, but the practical service still assesses competence and suitability against Swedish licensing expectations.

Your next step

Begin with a one-page status summary and the official assessment document, then build a Sweden-wide target list instead of waiting for a single advertised post. Apply only to services that can provide the complete six-month assessment, named supervision and valid authorisation. The best placement is not simply the first “yes”; it is an arrangement that can lawfully begin, be properly assessed and produce the certificate Socialstyrelsen needs.
