Swedish Conversation Club

Swedish Conversation Group

Språkcafé ☕

Are you looking for conversation partners to practice your Swedish, discuss various topics or just casual chatting?
Then you are welcome to join our free Swedish conversation group. To be a member and participate in Swedish Conversation Club is absolutely free of charge.

Our digital Swedish Language café, Språkcafé, is online and open to everyone, regardless of the level of Swedish.

We are using ZOOM  as a meeting platform. It is recommended that you download them for better performance, but otherwise, they are cloud-based apps. We inform by email, which platform we use.
You need to register if you want to be part of the Swedish speaking group. You just have to register once, so you don’t need to do that each time you join the session.

Routines in Språkcafé

In order to have a pleasant chat in our Swedish Conversation Group we have some routines:

  • Make sure that you have a working microphone and camera.
  • You must have your camera on for participation so people can see whom they are talking to.
  • If you know your level, please edit your name in ZOOM and write your level in the brackets. For example, Robert ( A2 – level ). That will help us to sort the participants according to the level. Otherwise, if you are a new participant, we have no idea about your Swedish level.
If you are unsure about your level according to CEFR, you can read more about Swedish language levels.
  • Keep the conversations as much as possible in Swedish language. Of course, if you don’t know the word in Swedish, you can always use English words. Just don’t forget the purpose of språkcafé: practicing your Swedish language skill.
  • If you study Swedish with “Online Swedish” through our University partners and want to obtain academic credit points ECTS, you must attend at least 10 Swedish Conversation sessions per course.

How does our språkcafé work?

We start the session with a little warm-up, a quiz game while participants drop in to join. When we are done with the quiz game, we make a very short presentation about our Språkcafé since we always have new members. After the short presentation, you will be sent to a “breakout room”, to a small group of participants.

Your first group is going to be mixed levels. After roughly 20 minutes of mixed-level group, you will be replaced to another group so that we can even the group level as much as possible. It is not always possible since there is never the same amount of participants representing the same level. Yet, we will try our best to match the levels. Since you followed the routine and added your Swedish level to your name in ZOOM, like “Robert (A2-LEVEL)” it will not be hard to do it.

What you want to talk about in the group is up to you. We suggest some discussion topics and an online Swedish language game if you want inspiration.

You register to our Swedish språkcafé only once. Then you will get emails from us with invitations to the sessions. If you wonder when we have the next session, you can check our Events page. If the schedule of språkcafé is not updated, don’t worry; as you are registered, you will be notified about the upcoming session.

Once you are registered and get an email invitation to Språkcafé, then you will receive an email, and you can simply press the “Join the Session” button here on this page.

You press the “Join the Session” button every time you join a språkcafé session. As said earlier, you register only once and should not worry about it. In other words, you don’t register for each session. You simply press the “Join the Session” button here on this page.

When is next Speaking session?

As you register, you will receive emails in advance for upcoming sessions. We regularly have sessions on Wednesdays at 12:00 and Saturdays at 19:00 (Swedish time).  We always announce the upcoming sessions by email. That is why you need to register and check your spam box.

Gmail Guide

Gmail Guide: How to Make Sure ONLINE SWEDISH Emails Arrive in Your Primary Inbox

Follow these steps once so you do not miss important course updates, webinar links, lesson reminders, recordings, or other messages from ONLINE SWEDISH.

Sometimes Gmail automatically places newsletters and course emails in the Promotions tab or Spam folder. This can happen even after you have registered for a course or event.

The guide below shows you how to create a Gmail filter. This tells Gmail that emails from ONLINE SWEDISH are important and should arrive in your Primary inbox.

Before you start: This guide is for Gmail in a web browser on a computer. The steps may look slightly different on a phone or tablet.

You only need to do this once.

1

Open an email from ONLINE SWEDISH

First, open Gmail and look in your inbox for an email from ONLINE SWEDISH. The subject may be about a course, Språkcafé, a webinar, a recording, or another ONLINE SWEDISH message.

If you cannot find an email from ONLINE SWEDISH

If you have registered but do not see an email from ONLINE SWEDISH, use the Gmail search bar at the top of the page.

Click inside the search bar and type one of these keywords:

  • ONLINE SWEDISH
  • online swedish
  • Swedish Conversation Club
  • Språkcafé

Press Enter. When you find an ONLINE SWEDISH email, open it.

Step 1: Open an email from ONLINE SWEDISH in Gmail
2

Click the three dots in the top-right corner

When the email is open, look at the top-right area of the email message. You will see several small icons.

Click the three vertical dots. This opens the email options menu.

Important

Make sure you click the three dots inside the email message, not the browser menu and not the Gmail settings icon.

Step 2: Click the three-dot menu in Gmail
3

Choose “Filter messages like this”

After clicking the three dots, a menu will open. Scroll down in the menu if needed.

Click Filter messages like this.

Do not choose these options

Do not click Report spam, Block, or Delete. These options are not needed for this setup.

Step 3: Choose Filter messages like this in Gmail
4

Write “online swedish” in “Has the words” and click “Create filter”

A filter window will open. You will see several fields, such as From, To, Subject, and Has the words.

In the field called Has the words, write:

Text to write

online swedish

If the words are already written there, you can leave them as they are.

Then click Create filter.

Very important

  • Click Create filter.
  • Do not click the blue Search button.
  • The Search button only searches your Gmail. It does not create the filter.
Step 4: Type online swedish in Has the words and click Create filter
5

Select the recommended filter settings

Gmail will now ask what it should do with messages that match this filter. This is the most important part of the setup.

Check these two boxes:

Recommended settings

  • Never send it to Spam
  • Always mark it as important

Never send it to Spam tells Gmail not to place these messages in the Spam folder.

Always mark it as important tells Gmail that these messages are useful and should be treated as important.

Step 5: Select Never send it to Spam and Always mark it as important
6

Choose “Primary” under “Categorize as”

Next, find the option called Categorize as. Check the box next to it.

Then open the dropdown menu and choose Primary.

Why choose Primary?

This helps Gmail place ONLINE SWEDISH emails in the Primary inbox instead of Promotions or other tabs.

Step 6: Choose Primary under Categorize as
7

Apply the filter and save it

Before saving, you can also check Also apply filter to matching conversations.

This applies the same rule to older ONLINE SWEDISH emails that are already in your Gmail account.

Your final settings should be

  • Never send it to Spam
  • Always mark it as important
  • Categorize as: Primary
  • Also apply filter to matching conversations — recommended

Finally, click the blue Create filter button to save everything.

Do not select these options

  • Skip the Inbox — this would archive the email.
  • Delete it — this would delete the email.
  • Mark as read — this could make you miss new messages.
Step 7: Save the Gmail filter by clicking Create filter

Done!

After creating this filter, ONLINE SWEDISH emails should arrive in your Primary inbox instead of Spam or Promotions.

This helps you avoid missing course updates, webinar links, session reminders, recordings, and important announcements.

Additional recommendation

You can also add info[at]onlineswedish.org to your Gmail contacts. This gives Gmail an additional signal that ONLINE SWEDISH is a trusted sender.

※ Replace [at] with the normal email symbol.
