A1–C1 Study Pathway with Medical Swedish
Build the Swedish you need for everyday life and professional communication in healthcare. ONLINE SWEDISH offers a structured online pathway for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals: general Swedish from beginner to advanced level, Writing & Speaking, and the specialist Swedish for Medical Staff course.

1. Choose your starting point
Complete beginner? Start with Swedish A1. You do not need previous knowledge of Swedish.
Already studied Swedish? Send us information about your previous courses and any valid language certificates. We will review your starting point with you and help you identify the courses you still need for your study and certificate goals.
The full pathway from beginner level typically takes 11–12 months. Your actual plan depends on your starting level, available course dates, progress and completion of the required live sessions and assessments. Check the timetable before planning your finish date.
2. Follow the eight-course pathway
The programme combines seven general Swedish courses with Swedish for Medical Staff (SFM). General Swedish develops the language foundation; SFM adds specialist vocabulary and practice with medical texts.

You can begin SFM after completing A2. You can therefore develop your medical vocabulary while continuing through the general Swedish pathway.

3. Choose live classes or video study with mentorship

4. Plan your weekly timetable
All times below are Swedish local time.

Different courses occupy the two general-course tracks during the year. Check the dates and track for your chosen level; availability in both time slots is not automatic. If you live outside Sweden, check your local time throughout the course, including clock changes.

What happens during SFM?
SFM requires at least 30 live sessions, including at least 20 with active participation. You may listen and follow along during up to ten warm-up sessions, or participate actively from the start; all 30 may be active. Each lesson is two hours. Thirty sessions is a minimum, not a limit.
Join after completing A2, including A2 at another school, without waiting to finish earlier Språkcafé sessions. SFM runs in a repeating annual loop of roughly 40–45 lessons. Join at any point and continue with the next cohort; covering the entire book is not required. Full lessons are normally expected, with occasional late arrival or early departure accepted. SFM participation and active/listening status are reported through the e-learning platform.
Topics include medical terminology, the human body and organ systems, symptoms and diseases, medication, microbiology and emergency care. SFM is a language course using medical subject matter.

Healthcare certification: all requirements in one place
Taking a C1 course alone does not establish C1 proficiency or qualify you for our healthcare Certificate of Knowledge. A CEFR level may require several courses. The current healthcare pathway requires B2, Writing & Speaking, C1 and SFM with ONLINE SWEDISH, plus any earlier courses needed for your starting level. Prior B2 or C1 study elsewhere does not automatically waive these required courses.
Flexible study, with required live participation
Medical Professional Mode video courses can start at any time, independently of the live schedule. You may complete B2, then C1, then W&S; the order can be arranged flexibly, but all requirements must be completed before the final examination. Completing the video lessons quickly does not remove the live-session requirements, so the full certification pathway cannot be promised in one month.
W&S requires at least 80% live attendance, regardless of your starting level or study format. You may join a cohort late and make up missing attendance with the next cohort free of charge. W&S performance is the main basis for your teacher’s assessment of examination readiness.
Språkcafé: accumulated across your studies
Complete ten standard Språkcafé sessions for each course you take with us, including W&S but excluding SFM. A standard session is two hours. Sessions and hours accumulate across your studies and must be completed before the final examination; they need not be completed during each individual course. Report check-in and check-out through the e-learning platform.
For example, B2 + W&S + C1 + SFM requires 30 Språkcafé session equivalents, or 60 accumulated hours, plus the separate SFM requirement below. You do not owe sessions for earlier levels studied elsewhere. One hour on one visit plus three hours on another equals four accumulated hours, or two standard session equivalents.
SFM: minimum 30 sessions, at least 20 active
Attend at least 30 two-hour SFM sessions, including at least 20 active sessions. Up to ten sessions may be used to listen and follow along; you may also participate actively from the start and make all 30 active. Thirty is a minimum, not a cap. Full lessons are normally expected; occasional late arrival or early departure is acceptable.
Join after completing A2, including A2 at another school, without waiting to finish earlier conversation sessions. SFM runs in a repeating annual loop of about 40–45 lessons; you can join at any point and continue with the next cohort. You need not cover the entire book. Lessons normally run weekly; extra sessions may be offered during ordinary course break weeks. Report attendance and active/listening participation through the e-learning platform.
SFM costs €399 once. Repeat the loop or join later cohorts without paying again, even if the price later changes for new purchasers.
Progression assessments and knowledge warranty
Medical-mode video students take a short assessment after each course before progressing. These tests check understanding of the course material and all retakes are free. If you do not pass, repeat that course and renew its 90-day access free of charge. This is separate from the final C1 examination. Under our knowledge warranty, you may repeat purchased courses, including W&S, free of charge to work towards your target level. The warranty does not waive attendance or passing requirements.
Bundles and discounts
Healthcare professionals receive normal bulk/bundle discounts. W&S may be included; SFM is the only course excluded from bundles and discounts. Healthcare professionals do not receive loyalty discounts or free-course rewards in live or video mode. Those attendance incentives are for eligible non-medical learners.
Booking and passing the final examination
Speak directly with your teacher once the required courses and attendance are complete. Your teacher assesses readiness and arranges dates individually with the examiner. Everything is online; no travel or fixed examination date is required.
You must pass all four language skills separately and the separate Medical Swedish assessment. One failed component means retaking only that component, after at least two weeks from the examination date. Two or more failed components mean retaking the whole examination, after at least four weeks from the examination date. These are minimum waits, not deadlines: you may prepare for longer. You receive feedback on what to improve.

Allow 5 hours 30 minutes on Day 1, including breaks, plus equipment and identity checks. The separate 60-minute Medical Swedish assessment can take place the following day by agreement. It involves reading medical texts and answering questions through discussion to demonstrate understanding of medical terminology and texts.
You need a computer with webcam, microphone and speakers, plus a separate phone or tablet camera. The front camera shows your face; the second shows your whole body, hands and desk. Both cameras remain on throughout examination components and the 15-minute breaks. You may leave your desk during those short breaks. You may disconnect during the one-hour break, but return with both views ready before the next part.
Examination fees and retakes
The first final C1 examination attempt is included. If your teacher assesses you as ready and approves your attempt, retakes, including subsequent retakes, are included free of charge. If your teacher says you are not ready but you insist on taking the examination after completing the required courses, your first attempt is still free; if you fail, a re-examination costs €499, even for one component. Intermediate course assessment retakes are free.
Certificate, documentation and Socialstyrelsen
Results and, if you pass, your certificate and supporting documentation are provided within five working days of completing all examination parts. There is no separate certificate or documentation fee. The documentation records that you passed Medical Swedish.
Your documentation includes the completed courses, study hours and examination results, with an online-verifiable serial number. To date, we are not aware of any graduate whose ONLINE SWEDISH certificate has been rejected by Socialstyrelsen. This describes our experience; it is not a guarantee of the outcome of a future individual application.
7. Register for your healthcare study pathway
Tell us your profession, current Swedish level, previous language study and preferred study format. Include when you would like to start and which live-session times you can attend. We can help you choose a starting course and check your W&S and SFM plan.
