Medical Swedish: Course Overview
Swedish for Medical Professionals aka “Swedish for Medical Staff” (SFM) is a medical Swedish course tailored for medical staff who intend to work in Sweden within their profession. The language course is at the C1/C2 (CEFR) level. Students can join after completing A2, including A2 studied elsewhere. Students take the “Swedish for Medical Professionals” (SFM) course alongside their regular Swedish courses→.
For the complete sequence of general Swedish, C1 and specialist study, see our Swedish pathway for healthcare professionals.
The “Swedish for Medical Professionals” (SFM) course is a crucial supplementary course designed for medical staff. The SFM course is not sufficient on its own to meet the C1 level certificate requirements for Socialstyrelsen→. This course is an integral and mandatory part of our medical staff curriculum. To receive a certificate that aligns with Socialstyrelsen’s standards, medical staff students must complete the SFM course.
The Swedish for Medical Professionals course is held once a week, as students have their regular Swedish lessons Monday through Thursday and Conversation sessions on Saturdays. Currently, SFM lessons take place on Fridays at 19:00 Swedish time. The course fee is €399, and is not included in the Academy Option→.
Associated with KI or a Swedish hospital? Check the Swedish course offer for KI and hospital associates. The SFM course is separate from that offer.
SFM requires at least 30 live sessions, including at least 20 with active participation. You may listen and follow along during up to ten warm-up sessions, or participate actively from the start; all 30 may be active. Each lesson is two hours. Thirty sessions is a minimum, not a limit. You can join after completing A2, even if you have not yet completed earlier Språkcafé sessions.
SFM sessions are separate from Språkcafé. Normally attend the full two-hour lesson; occasional late arrival or early departure is acceptable. The annual loop contains approximately 40–45 lessons, depending on progress. You may join at any point and continue with the next cohort. You do not have to cover the entire book. Sessions normally run weekly, with extra sessions sometimes offered during general-course break weeks.
The €399 fee is a one-time payment. Repeat the loop and join later cohorts without further payment, even if the price changes for new purchases. SFM is excluded from all bundles and discounts.
Report attendance and active/listening participation through the e-learning platform. At the final C1 examination stage, you must also pass a separate 60-minute Medical Swedish assessment: reading medical texts and discussing questions about their meaning and terminology. Course attendance alone is not sufficient for certification.
