Difference between flera and fler

What is the difference between fler and flera?

The answer is that there is no difference between “fler” and “flera” and they can be used interchangeably if they refer to “more” in the sentence, when you compare, or they refer to “further”, or “additional”, like “one more” or “many more”. “Flera” is not interchangeable with “fler” if it refers to quantity (amount/number). When we refer to quantity as (many) then we have to choose “flera”.

Fler or flera is comparative form of pronoun många (many), and flest is the superlative form of många.

  • många – fler – flest
  • many – more -most

Flera can also be an indefinite pronoun, referring to “many” and can be interchangeable with “många”.

If you compare this sentence:

  • Vi har fler/flera besökare idag än igår. “We have more visitors today than yesterday”

In this case, both fler and flera can be used interchangeably because we compare. In this case, it is an adjective.

Another case when fler and flera are interchangeable is when you refer to “further”, or “additional”, like “one more” or “many more”.

  • Peter köpte fler/ flera kakor. “Peter bought additional cookies”
We assume that Peter has bought cookies, and now he has gone back to the store and bought one more/ additional pack of cookies

Flera as pronoun

Fler and flera are not interchangeable when you refer to the quantity (amount/number). When you refer to the quantity you have to use “flera” which means “many” and it is interchangeable with “många”.
